"2001: A Space Odyssey" would have been a lot more fun if Jon Benjamin ("Archer," "Bob's Burgers") had voiced HAL 9000.
Really want to hear him lackadaisically recite "Daisy" now.
Last Friday night, H. Jon Benjamin stopped by the Late Night Basement show in Brooklyn to do some comedy, and used his iconic voice (Bob's Burgers, Archer, Dr. Katz, Home Movies) to give some much-needed levity to one of sci-fi's driest personalities, HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
NOTE: This is a recording of a live show, and it's in mono. It's probably only gonna come out of the left speaker.
Frankly, Benjamin's version is also a little scarier, because at least you felt like the original HAL was taking the threat from Dave seriously. Benjamin's HAL is apparently so advanced that it is literally cracking up and only half paying attention to Dave's attempts to kill him. There's nothing scarier than knowing you're so outmatched that your opponent can't stop from laughing and going off on tangents during your big face-off.
