RT if you believe all societal institutions are corrupting! #Transcendentalism

In retrospect, Henry David Thoreau's fear that the telegraph would ruin society by making communication so easy that we would be flooded with unimportant information is both hilariously naive and scarily dead-on. He worried that the wires would bring gossip about European royalty, which by our standards is real, hard news. If he were alive today his DIY attitude would just make him a hipster. Just think about how many other authors would have sucked in the Internet age, like everything by Emily Dickinson because a shut-in who writes constantly would be huge on Tumblr and she'd stop wanting to die. Worse, Plato's Republic would call for a society governed by the Twitter elite.
