A couple refused to tip their former Marine waitress because she's gay. Here's how the restaurant responded.
It was supposed to be a fusion of Asian cuisines, not a fusion of homophobia and tipping.
Dayna Morales, a former Marine who is now a waitress at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, New Jersey, shared the above image with Have A Gay Day. Apparently, a couple with two young children walked into the restaurant and were seated at one of Morales' tables. Morales was immediately caught off guard by the mother of the family. Morales writes, "As I introduce myself and tell them my name is Dayna - the mom proceeds to look at me and say 'oh I thought you were gonna say your name is Dan. You sure surprised us!'" (Apparently, this woman believes in the bathroom-door-labeling model of sexuality.)
When they paid, the couple left the above message on their receipt, which says, "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life." First of all, this is homophobia at its absolute worst. But more importantly, we all tip people whose lifestyles we don't agree with all the time! A tip isn't a vote of personal or political support for a person's lifestyle; it's a thank you for bringing out the correct order in a timely fashion. All of which means this lady is worse than a bigot: she's cheap.
Dayna goes on:
Amazingly, Dayna restrained herself and did not spit in their food. But the Internet collectively e-spit in the mom's food, because they were pissed on Dayna's behalf. Many people offered support on Have A Gay Day and the Facebook page for Dayna's restaurant.
Finally, here's what Dayna's awesome boss had to say on the restaurant's Facebook page:
I bet he tipped 20%, too.
