At least they didn't pick "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

In a teaser for their coverage of the funeral of Nelson Mandela this morning, CBS made the somewhat obtuse choice of using Toto's "Africa" as the background music. In other words, instead of using South African music, they picked the whitest song about Africa ever written. Jeff Porcaro, who co-wrote the song, says this is the inspiration behind it: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."

Apparently, someone at CBS went on iTunes and searched "Africa," and Toto's song came up first. All they had to do was search "South Africa" to get some more promising options (I researched this), so that's just laziness.

To be fair to CBS, "Africa" did hit #18 on the South African Singles Chart in 1983.
