A tweeter named Danielle Matheson blasted a photo of her cat into the internet, and it went wildly viral. This is not all that uncommon, as you know.

"It's kind of a fixer upper..."
"It's kind of a fixer upper..."
"I'll make it work."
"I'll make it work."

"Nobody has had a more productive day than my mother," wrote Matheson. Her mother had learned a magic trick from Pinterest, and quickly put it into action (caction?). Pinterest had told her that "if you put a square on the floor, the cat will get in it."

PINTEREST WAS RIGHT.

Then everyone started copying her.

PINTEREST WAS SUPER RIGHT. So go ahead, get your cat and try it out. Did it work? Waiting...

Of course it did! That's because this is actually a well documented phenomenon, although in 2014 this trick blew up with circles instead of squares.

At the time, no one really knew why the cats couldn't resist the circle trick. Here were some of the theories, compiled by the Daily Mail:

  • The tape had an interesting scent the cat couldn't resist investigating.
  • Cats are curious little cats, and "they are usually fascinated with anything new."
  • Cats love a safe, enclosed space.

That last theory seems especially compelling, especially considering cats' love of boxes, well-documented in this article from Wired.

But no matter the reason, go get some tape and see what this trick's all about. It's the one time your cat will actually do what you want her to.
