I offer my humblest apology for offending anyone, particularly those in the Asian community, last week. It was not my intention, and the humor was not met with any malice or disrespect whatsoever. —SH
The bit that caused the outrage was from an episode of his TV show, where he fails to understand that a gag book called How To Date A White Woman: A Practical Guide For Asian Men was just that—a gag.
In a New York Times op ed published Sunday called "Hey Steve, Who Says I Might Not Steal Your Girl?," Eddie Huang (the author of Fresh Off the Boat, the book that led to the TV series) wrote,
Attractiveness is a very haphazard dish that can’t be boiled down to height or skin color, but Asian men are told that regardless of what the idyllic mirepoix is or isn’t, we just don’t have the ingredients.
