Fresh Off The Boat's Eddie Huang was not pleased with Steve Harvey's recent comments mocking Asian men, and now he's speaking out about it.
In case you're not familiar with the story, Steve Harvey found himself in hot water recently after making tasteless jokes about Asian men on his show, which you can see below.
In the bit, Harvey asks the women in his audience if they like Asian men, and then says, "I don't even like Chinese food."
Huang, who is the author of Fresh Off the Boat (the book that inspired the TV series) shared his response to Harvey's comments in a NY Times op-ed. Huang talks about the book Steve Harvey referenced on his show, How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men, and stated that he never thought anyone would take a "gag" book seriously, until he saw Harvey on his show. Huang writes:
Yet the one joke that still hurts, the sore spot that even my closest friends will press, the one stereotype that I still mistakenly believe at the most inopportune bedroom moments — and I know Joe and Steve do as well — is that women don’t want Asian men. Attractiveness is a very haphazard dish that can’t be boiled down to height or skin color, but Asian men are told that regardless of what the idyllic mirepoix is or isn’t, we just don’t have the ingredients.”
Eddie Huang went on to point out in his response how odd it was that Steve Harvey, who has spent a lot of time trying to uplift the black community, didn't seem to have a problem encouraging stereotypes about another marginalized community. He writes:
That’s why this Steve Harvey episode is so upsetting. He speaks openly about issues facing the black community, he is a man of God, and he has a huge platform to speak from. Unfortunately, he’s also the type of guy who orders Krug champagne for himself and Cook’s for every one else. For his own personal profit, he’s willing to perpetuate the emasculation of Asian men regardless of how hypocritical it is.
While Eddie Huang was certainly entitled to complain about Harvey's comments, it seems he's not innocent when it comes to generalizing.
According to The Root, Huang said on an episode of Bill Maher's show back in 2015 that being an Asian man in the dating world is a lot like being a black woman.
“I feel like Asian men have been emasculated so much in America that we’re basically treated like black women," he said. "... When I sit on OkCupid no one wants to talk to me either.”
Ohhhhh boy. Here's an idea. Let's all stop talking.
Steve Harvey apologized for his comments in a tweet on Tuesday.
