Remember that innocent time in American history before everyone found out Taylor Swift was lying about her knowledge of the song "Famous" and the most scandalous topic of the day was "Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift are totally faking their relationship, right? I mean, come on, THAT TANK TOP."

The tank top in question, of course, was the "I heart T.S." one that Tom Hiddleston donned for a squad meetup/photo shoot at Taylor's beach house during their short-lived romance. After a couple weeks of staged-looking paparazzi photos, the shirt was the last straw for observers who thought the coupling was less than authentic.

After being annoyingly coy about the Taylor Swift topic in countless interviews, Tom Hiddleston finally opened up about the relationship — and the tank top — in a fantastic GQ cover story.

Here's what he said about the tank top, specifically:

“The truth is, it was the Fourth of July and a public holiday and we were playing a game and I slipped and hurt my back. And I wanted to protect the graze from the sun and said, ’Does anyone have a T-shirt?’ And one of her friends said, ’I’ve got this.’ And we all laughed about it. It was a joke.”

Needless to say the joke bombed.

As for the relationship itself, Tom Hiddleston swears it was genuine.

"A relationship exists between two people. We will always know what it was. The narratives that are out there altogether have been extrapolated from pictures that were taken without consent or permission, with no context...Of course it was real."

So there you go.
