Celebrities come and go from the mainstream all the time. They come and inspire us one week, and the next, we're on to the next big thing. On a popular Reddit thread, users share some of the celebrities that were mainstream and then just disappeared.
Group 'Lmfao'
These guys dominated the sounds of the early 2010s. Songs like 'Shots,' 'Sexy and I Know It,' and 'Party Rock Anthem' was all the rage in clubs worldwide. Their song 'Get Crazy' was chosen as the theme song for MTV's 'Jersey Shore.' Despite all their success, the group parted ways in 2012 and has since been on indefinite hiatus.
Nelly Furtado
In 2006 Furtado had a nervous breakdown on stage during her 'I was on the Loose' tour. Furtado told the Daily Mail, '-being a mum and a singer on the road. I was exhausted.' Furtado realized that being at home and having the family experience was what she wanted in life, and then she took time to be with her family.
She released a Spanish language album in 2009 called Mi Pian and another album in 2012, The Spirit Indestructible. Then she took a five-year break working with the charity, Save The Children. In 2017 Nelly Furtado released what likely is her final album, The Ride, and starter her record label.
Chris Tucker
Stand Up Comedian and Rush Hour co-star Chris Tucker made his debut as a performer on the HBO comedy series Def Comedy Jam and was a performer until 1997. He scored roles in the films House Party 3 and Friday before landing his role in Rush Hour.
After Rush Hour, Tucker took a long break before being cast in Silver Linings Playbook alongside Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Tucker has grown closer to his religion, admitting that he has declined roles because of his faith and the content he creates for his stand-up. Currently, Tucker seems to be on another break from the spotlight.
Cameron Diaz
Diaz has been in films like The Mask, Charlie's Angels, and My Best Friend's Wedding and last starred in the 2014 film Annie before withdrawing from Hollywood. In 2015 Diaz married Benji Madden, the guitarist of the band Good Charlotte. They had a child together, and Diaz seems to have turned to family life. She also released a new wine line called Avaline and wrote two self-help books.
Renee Zellweger fell off the face of the Earth until she returned with a different face.
Zellweger was one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood after her roles in Chicago, Jerry Maguire, and Bridget Jones' Diary. In 2014 there was cause to speculate as to whether she'd undergone cosmetic surgery, and in 2019 the actress opened up about the scrutiny and the emotional trauma she went through.
She recanted a story on SiriusXM in which Zellweger recalled people discussing her appearance on the subway and how different she looked before getting up to reveal that she was there. She said, 'So I get up and stand next to the door waiting for it to open, and the man is still talking about how stupid I am. And he looked up and said, 'Oh God, you're not-you are! Oh my God, but you look just like yourself!'
Zellweger made no film or TV appearances between 2010 and 2016 before dropping Bridget Jones' Baby and is now promoting her role in the upcoming Judy Garland biopic, Judy.
Will always be Thora Birch for me
The star of American Beauty disappeared after her starring role in the 2001 film Ghost World. In an interview with the Guardian in 2014, Birch mentioned she was looking for an agent. Birch didn't want to conform to Hollywood and said that she 'didn't take advice, and that pissed people off.'
In 2010 she was fired from the off-Broadway revival of Dracula after it was alleged her father, her manager at the time, had physically threatened one of the other actors. We may see more of Thora as she most recently portrayed Gamma in the Walking Dead and plays Jess in 13 Minutes.
Tom from MySpace was everyone's best friend at one point.
Myspace couldn't keep up with Facebook, so Thomas Anderson sold Myspace to News Corp in 2005 for $580 million before retiring in 2009 and moving to Hawaii. Our old friend is now pursuing a new career as a travel photographer.
Taylor Lautner
In 2008, Jacob Black sparked the most significant debate of the year about being on team Edward or team Jacob, as Lautner rose to prominence for his character portrayal. Lautner seemed to be poised for more tremendous success after Twilight. However his career never took off the same way Kristen Stewart's and Robert Pattinson's did.
His other films have been heavily criticized and never truly pleased critics. In 2011 Lautner starred in the action film 'Abduction' that unfortunately did not do well, being charged as a film that tried to use Lautern's fame to cash in. In 2020 Lautner was notably excluded from 'We Can Be Heroes,' the sequel to 'Sharkboy and Lavagirl' in his co-star Taylor Dooley did appear.
