While the last couple of weeks have seen Saturday Night Live open with hilarious face-offs between Kate McKinnon's Hillary Clinton and Alec Baldwin's Donald Trump, the first episode after the trainwreck of an election immediately struck a more elegiac tone. McKinnon, once again as Hillary, paid tribute to the recently departed poet and musician Leonard Cohen—and perhaps the dream of American democracy itself—with a soulful rendition of "Hallelujah," Cohen's most-covered song.
