Michael Flynn, the artist formerly known as National Security Advisor, resigned Monday night after The Washington Post revealed that he had potentially illegal conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States, lied to Vice President Pence about it, and that the Justice Department warned the White House that he is vulnerable to Russian blackmail (a la pee pee tape).
The Michael Flynn resignation came a mere seven hours after Kellyanne Conway said that Flynn maintained "the full trust of the President," and um, as if her credibility couldn't get any worse, she seems to be really floundering trying to gel the narrative.
Matt Lauer stood firm, pointing out the inconsistencies in Conway's story, with the White House's official line that scandal isn't about Flynn's call with Russia, but the fact that he "mislead" Pence about it.
“You’re saying that was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Lauer said, “but the White House knew about that last month, when the Justice Department warned the White House that Flynn had not been completely honest.”
Kellyanne Conway tried to explain with "well, that’s one characterization, but the fact is General Flynn continued in that position."
And Matt Lauer went in for the kill:
Kellyanne, that makes no sense. Last month the Justice Department warned the White House that General Flynn misled them; and that, as a result. He was vulnerable to blackmail. And at that moment he still had the complete trust of the president?
Kellyanne Conway didn't answer the question.
People are already speculating that Conway could be the next administration official to go.
Matt Lauer is a baller now. Let's hope he keeps this up.
