Modern Family has been on the air for eight seasons now, but it's not done making headlines yet. The popular sitcom announced that it has cast its first ever openly transgender child actor.

The character, Tom, is a friend of Mitchell and Cam's daughter Lily. Tom is played by 8-year-old actor Jackson Millarker, whose character will debut in this week's episode.

In the episode "A Stereotypical Day," Lily invites Tom over for a playdate. Mitchell and Cam are proud of themselves for raising such a loving and tolerant child, until one of the show's classic misunderstandings leads them to believe that Lily might not be as accepting as they thought.

Modern Family has always done a great job with representation in media, and casting a transgender actor to play a transgender character is another huge step in the right direction. Plus, we're sure the episode will be hilarious and feature plenty of A+ moments from Queen Lily.

"A Stereotypical Day" will air Wednesday night at 9/8c on ABC.
