Are you ready to be shocked and inspired? Prepare yourself. This dude, Andrew Johnson, a fitness model, has no pulse. Like, literally, his heart produces no pulse, and he has to carry batteries everywhere to keep it going. Yet he still seems like the nicest dude you'll ever meet. The world might be terrible, but people like Andrew make it bearable.
In 2012, Andrew was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which affects the heart's ability to pump blood. Andrew spent 4 months in the I.C.U. and was fitted with a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, which basically pumps Andrew's heart for him. The thing is, the LVAD needs power that Andrew's body can't provide, so he carries around huge battery packs that need to be recharged regularly to keep him alive.
Yes, Andrew is just like your iPhone. The LVAD is a temporary fix until Andrew gets a match for a full heart replacement. Instead of wallowing in what would be a totally reasonable situation to wallow in, Andrew decided to live. He said...
"At first I was upset at having an artificial heart, and then there was the moment that I realized that this is my life for now. Either I can dwell and feel sorry for myself, or I can continue doing the things that I love to do the best way I can. And I haven't stopped."
And as for those gnarly scars...
I'm proud of the scars that I have from my surgeries, because scars are beautiful. They're a part of you. They tell your story. And no one can take that away from you.
This dude, you guys! We can't. Buckets of inspirational happy tears everywhere. Even in the face of all of this hard life realities Andrew has been forced to tackle, he hasn't lost his sense of humor.
And now we laugh with Andrew, because he's won the day!
