Lying on the internet is one of those things that most of us did in AOL chatrooms in the 90s (unless you're too young to have experienced AOL chatrooms in which case, congrats on your extreme youth, you smooth-skinned dummy!). But at a certain point, we all realized that it wasn't worth the effort. And also, because while there are certainly a lot of dumb people on the internet, there are also a lot of smart people who are pretty good at sniffing out lies. And there are few things more embarrassing than getting caught in a lie, and publicly shamed for it, and then ending up on a blogger's year end list of people who lied online and got publicly shamed for it.
