When you're looking for a good restaurant, there are so many deciding factors. Do you go by word of mouth? Yelp reviews? Sleek Instagram branding?

Well, one good way to do it is to ask a chef. A recent Reddit thread asked, "Chefs, what do you look for when you select a restaurant to dine at?" There's a wide variety of answers, all of which could help you pick a perfect next meal.

1. Some just look for variety.

I eat mainly at places that I’m not familiar with the techniques or ingredients. I was trained in French food and have worked in Italian places. I mostly eat Thai, Korean and Ethiopian when I go out. But any restaurant that has a unique menu will always get at least one visit from me. - Ironchefheff

2. Those food safety ratings are legit.

5* hygiene rating. - ABisset
