Alcoholism is an illness that can be harrowing to diagnose. People with alcohol use disorder also experience a "bottom" that puts the stakes in perspective. Hitting bottom looks different for everyone: it can be trouble with the law, the loss of a relationship, or a circumstance so nasty you can't risk ever having to clean up your own vomit again.

A Reddit thread asked, "Ex-drinkers, what was your 'damn I need to stop' moment?" The stories are disturbing, enlightening, and inspirational, all at once.

1. From S_Steiner_Accounting:

High school girlfriend hadn't seen me for a few years and bluntly told me I looked like sh*t and need to take better care of myself. She was super into me all through HS so i went over expecting to get laid, and instead got brutally rejected. Boozing hard really piled on the weight for me. Quit cold turkey and redirected that energy into eating clean and hitting the gym. When I got the urge to get intoxicated, i went to a 24H gym and would run until the urge passed.
