If you get in trouble for something, there are two approaches: you can own up to your mistake, apologize, and move on with your life. Or you can take the Shaggy "it wasn't me" approach and attempt to backpedal. Honestly, kudos to anyone brave enough to attempt this second approach (including Shaggy). Because 99% of the time it backfires.
The "oops I didn't mean to" page on Reddit is devoted to examples of people who did or said something dumb, embarrassing, or wrong, got caught, and then tried--and spectacularly failed--to backpedal.
