Nurses are some of the most underappreciated members of society. Senator Maureen Walsh of Washington recently claimed they 'probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day' while denouncing a bill that would mandate uninterrupted rest and meal breaks for nurses on shift. Their line of work is misunderstood, as people instinctively defer to doctors - while nurses are underestimated as mere 'assistants,' which I'm sure has nothing to do with the fact that the vast majority are women. They perform essential medical- and care-related tasks while undertaking the bulk of emotional labor that patients, particularly the geriatric and neurologically impaired, require. Nurses: we simply don't deserve you.
