Ugh, high school sports - I don't miss them. Between smelly locker rooms, bus rides to away games, and having to demonstrate 'school spirit', the experience was lackluster. I always thought wrestlers got the rawest deal, though. They would fast, run in sweatsuits, and basically develop eating disorders to make weigh-in. One of my friends got ringworm from a dirty mat. The whole thing seemed gross, except for watching men wrestle each other in singlets. That part was cool.
This week, one wrestler from Buena Regional High School in New Jersey underwent something unorthodox to compete: he had his dreadlocks cut off. Referee Alan Maloney told Andrew Johnson he could keep his locs intact and forfeit the match or cut them and wrestle. He received a hasty hair cut and won the match in overtime. Video of the incident made its way to Twitter, where it sparked a contentious debate.
