Cafeteria worker Dalene Bowden lost her job at an Idaho public school for giving a free lunch to a 12-year-old student with no money earlier this month. The lunch was worth $1.70, yet carries with it the hefty price of a person's entire career. It's not the first time a lunch lady has been fired for having a soul.
The main takeaway from the letter reads:
The reason for your termination is due to your theft -- stealing school district or another’s property and inaccurate transactions when ordering, receiving and serving food.
Bowden admits she was "in the wrong" but has no regrets about not wanting a student to go hungry. She told the Idaho Statesman, “I would do it again in the same situation." She's started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover legal costs to fight to change school lunch laws. She's already raised $1,435, which is a lot of free lunches.
