Many, many children and adults deal with some form of disability, including the one writing this article (ADHD, baby!). School should be a safe and nurturing environment for all students, but unfortunately, this is not always the case. As many people who live with disability know from experience, teachers and school administrators are not always equipped to recognize physical or mental disabilities in students or to give them the patience, understanding and respect they require and deserve. This is ableism, even if teachers are unaware of it. And it can affect kids well into adulthood.

A woman named Shira, who has OCD and ADHD according to her Twitter name, highlighted this problem in a recent viral tweet about "ableism" from teachers:

Clearly, Shira is not alone in her experiences. Her viral tweet prompted hundreds and hundreds of people to share their own stories.
