One way to make an awkward situation or uncomfortable situation much worse is to refuse to acknowledge the awkwardness. This is why there are few experiences more awkward than the proverbial "elephant in the room." The popular expression describes an important or controversial problem that everyone, or almost everyone, is aware of, but no one is talking about it. They're especially common if you grew up in a repressed family that loves to sweep glaringly obvious problems under the rug.

Someone asked Reddit, "what's the biggest elephant you've ever seen in a room?"

These 18 people share stories of their most brutally awkward "elephant in the room" experiences, and I haven't internally cringed this hard since my last family reunion:

1.) From Big-Secretary9144:

Last year one manager Robert became obsessed with, sexually harassed and stalked a young female coworker but somehow managed to keep his job.

Fast forward to the start of this year and my company has mandatory anti sexual harassment training and the name of the harasser in the training example is Robert.

Big f**king elephant in the room.
