Being Old Money is truly its own world with a specific set of norms and traditions. Because the powers that be in Old Money circles are well...old, they are not the most accepting bunch.
When a teenager came out to her mom, her mom was loving and accepting—but worried about how her grandparents would react. The wealthy older couple had previously dissolved the trust of a grandchild who came out as gay, and the mom doesn't want her daughter to be denied the sizable sum because her parents are homophobes.
She asked "Am I The A**hole?" if she was a jerk to propose a compromise. She explained:
