Students at Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey are getting national attention after staging a walk out on Monday to protest a racist teacher.
According to ABC News, about two dozen students walked out of class just before 10 a.m. Monday morning in the wake of a 26-second video going viral last Thursday. The video depicts a teacher scolding a Spanish speaking student in front of the class, resulting in students getting up and leaving their desks in disgust.
"Men and women are fighting," the teacher tells the student. "They are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish. They are fighting for your right to speak American."
"You're being racist," a student could be heard replying in the video. "I know how to speak English."
To make matters worse, the woman pictured is reportedly an English teacher.
17-year-old student Yennifer Pinales came forward and claimed that the teacher's insults were targeted at her after she spoke Spanish in the classroom. A fellow student captured the teacher's racist rant on film. Pinales said she was kicked out of class after telling the teacher that she was offended by her words.
"The teacher should apologize," Pinales told ABC News. "She didn't only offend me, she offended a whole community. I'm not asking her to lose her job. And if she doesn't feel comfortable working with people speaking a second language then she should go someplace else."
Pinales says she has lived in the United States for nearly a decade and is fully fluent in English. ABC reports that Cliffside Park is a multi-cultural school with a large Latinx student population.
