A post shared by 🌙Manny Gutierrez (@mannymua733) on Jan 29, 2018 at 5:59pm PSTThe drama started last week when Manny reviewed Lashify's Control Kit for his 4,000,000+ subscribers on YouTube. In the video, entitled "TRYING ON THE WORLDS MOST EXPENSIVE LASHES! $125?! WTF," Manny tries the product and gives his signature hilarious commentary, but in the end, tells his followers that he does not feel that the lashes are worth the inflated price tag.Manny has a huge reach between all of his platforms (over a million Twitter followers and four million follwers on Instagram), and although he is not obligated to give any product a positive review, his mentioning your company in any capacity could be good for business regardless.Hey, all press is good press, right?Well, not according to Lashify's founder, Sahara Lotti.Lotti basically flew off the handle upon watching Manny's review of her lash kit, posting this scathing message to Lashify's Instagram account:"Thanks for the entertainment @mannymua733! Now can you please follow the directions, watch a tutorial or two and apply Lashify without a full face of makeup on (just like you would lash extensions) so you can give a proper review of our product?"Around the same time, she also uploaded this graphic reading: "Not everyone wants to look like a drag queen."Well, I beg to differ, but...Manny grabbed screenshots of both of them and uploaded them into Twitter.I don’t think the brand liked today video.... 😅😂 pic.twitter.com/3NNc5z9CGF— Manny MUA (@MannyMua733) March 16, 2018 The YouTube star was able to laugh the mean comments off, but Lotti was not done with him.Later, during a live Instagram tutorial on the Lashify account, Lotti said, "I don't know what the hell [Manny Mua] thought they were. Honestly, I don't know what he thought they were. But I have to remember, at the end of the day, he can have all the makeup he wants, but he's still a dude."She laughed at her own (bad) joke and continued to repeat some variation of "he's still a dude" several times.A fan captured the video:No rude😒 pic.twitter.com/jnImmIsrh0— tits mcgee (@mkcourd) March 16, 2018 This set Manny off:What the fuck does this even mean? “Manny you’re still a dude”... so you’re saying I can’t use it cause I’m a dude... okay cool and she’s sexist! I love it! Lashify you’re officially cancelled mamma 😘 good luck! https://t.co/cG7ySmegZb— Manny MUA (@MannyMua733) March 16, 2018 Several people jumped to Manny's defense, including his fellow makeup artists:Cancelled 👏🏼 shame on her. Just reported her page. 😤— PATRICKSTARRR (@patrickstarrr) March 16, 2018 Omg...she really let her ego destroy her own brand in a second— Samantha Ravndahl (@SsssamanthaaMUA) March 16, 2018 I’ve literally just reported that page, I can’t stand people like this. ESPECIALLY AN ASPIRING MAKE UP BRAND?! Using your gender to try & offend you? Na sis.— rach 🍒 leary (@rach_leary) March 16, 2018 One Twitter user even reached out to Lashify to let the company know that she did not appreciate their comments. Lashify responded in the worst possible way:https://twitter.com/Dionna_Justine/status/974578112783511552After Lotti basically single-handedly ran her own business into the ground by making sexist comments at one of YouTube's most beloved stars...she began apologizing.First she deleted the nasty posts and set the Lashify Instagram account to private. Then she issued this apology in an Instagram story :"We truly apologize to anyone who was offended or mistook our comment about drag. At Lashify we believe in total equality for everybody. Our product was and is meant to be androgynous and is designed to appeal to everyone. But we also believe in self-expression, humor, and defending ourselves. Our products are called Fluff, Blow, and Pinch. And our tagline is 'Your stripping days are over.' Let's save the drama for your lashes." Oh come on lady. giphyAt time of publication, the Lashify Instagram account is public again. When Allure reached out to Lashify regarding the situation, the company brushed off the sexist comments as a "joke". We created the Lashify™️ lash system with the intention of DIY lash extensions for both genders as stated clearly in our FAQs page. So far all our customers who are crazy about the system are women. When Manny didn’t feel the same love, our founder jokingly shrugged it off as maybe (lash extensions vs strips) appeal more to women hence the 'dude' comment. Out of context the comment may sound sexist, but the sentiment was 100% not. We apologize for the poor choice of words. At the end of their apology, they tagged on this bit calling out Manny's fans: We understand the anger over this issue, but we are absolutely shocked by the cyber-bullying and harassment displayed by his fan base. Neither sexism nor cyber-bullying is acceptable. Both behaviors are shameful. Whatever. All I know is that I'll be sticking with my $4.00 CVS falsies from now on, thankyouverymuch.
