Because of the expectations and uncertainty that surround first dates, they tend to go either really well or really, really badly. The plus side of a date going well is that it might lead to romance or at least some mutually enjoyable sexual activities. But the downside of a date going well is that no one (except your inner circle of supportive friends) wants to hear about it. Good first dates are fun to experience, but a total snooze-fest to hear about. Bad first dates, on the other hand: though they may be a nightmare to experience, they do make for a great story! And sure, good stories can't spoon you to sleep at night. But at least they can entertain total strangers on the internet!
