"Professors, what's important is not where my thesis is; it's that I learned something."

The Internet is the greatest tool humanity has ever had to bring people together so we can laugh at each other's misfortune. On the one hand, this is incredibly tragic. After "Jim" from Rutgers posted this almost-tearsoaked plea around campus, someone posted a picture of it online which quickly spread on sites like Neatorama. As sad as this is, who keeps five years of crucial data on D: drive without backing it up? He never even emailed a copy or put it in Google Docs? Jim is now rewriting his thesis defense and has given up on retrieving his laptop, but he hopes his example will teach other people to back up their data. Which is something he can teach people full-time now that he won't have a PhD.
