We were truly appalled by how long it took us to work these out.

A Manhattan teacher is under scrutiny today after trying to give her fourth graders a math worksheet of word problems about slavery. But we applaud this teacher for forcing kids to face the gritty reality of history rather than tossing them softballs about sharing a pizza. Back when we were kids, we got word problems calculating the numbers of shoes in concentration camps, figuring out how many people Pol Pot had executed per hour, and multiplying the number of people dying everyday in Vietnam by the number of days we were engaged in a protracted and pointless war. And you know what? We’ll never forget, because addition and subtraction are now brutally seared into our memories.
