The landmark Supreme Court ruling this week that overturned the Defense of Marriage Act was cause for celebration for many gay Muppets, their straight allies like Big Bird, and everyone at Sesame Street who supports civil liberties. The New Yorker cover for mid-July by artist Jack Hunter perfectly encapsulates the quiet joy that the ruling will bring to Bert and Ernie. Their on-screen relationship has never hidden that gay couples bicker just like straight couples, especially when one of them isn't very good at sharing, but has shown that love and rubber duckies win out in the end.
