As children, many of us were firmly instructed not to talk to strangers and to avoid taking or giving rides to wild cards. Of course, in the modern age of Uber the concept of car rides with strangers has been subverted into a norm, lightly regulated by a third party app and a technology-based sense of trust.

Still, even in the age of ride-sharing apps, many people look sideways at the idea of picking up a hitch-hiker. What if they are wielding a weapon, what if they have less-than-ideal intentions?! While these are certainly risks in other ride-sharing situations, our cultural ideas about hitch-hiking has fed a deeper sense of danger when driving by a roadside stranger. Despite the stranger danger anxieties, most hitch-hikers are decent people merely trying to get a lift.

In a popular Reddit thread, user MD786 shared a wholesome story of the time they picked up a hitch-hiker, and asked others to share theirs.
