Most people who grew up with siblings are familiar with the running joke that their parents had a definitive "favorite" of the family, but if a parent actually makes it obvious that they care more about one child than another one, the dynamic can bring about some damaging consequences.

Of course, even if a parent does genuinely favor one of their children over their other kids deep down, it's definitely a societal taboo to ever reveal that information. Letting your kids know that they're all equally loved is critically important to their development, and being a kid can be hard enough without having it confirmed that you're living in the shadow of your own siblings. Shout out to all the parents who put in the extra effort to make their middle children feel special. It's rough out there sometimes being a kid in a big family, especially if all your siblings are very close in age and share similar interests.

So, when a recent Reddit user decided to consult the internet's moral compass about a sticky situation with her husband and his preference for his older daughter from a previous relationship, people were ready to deem a verdict.
