Woman asks if she's wrong to skip holidays after overhearing mother-in-law doesn't want her there.

Mother-in-laws unfortunately get a bad reputation for being overprotective of their adult sons, judgemental, nosy, or just downright rude...

While the stereotype of an overbearing mother-in-law is a woman who will stop at nothing to make her son's partners feel like they'll never be "worthy" of the family, there are of course plenty of women who happily welcome their adult children's partners into the family traditions. Even without in-law drama, family holidays can be a special sort of chaos. Traveling from different places with kids and dogs and presents in tow, sitting around the table and trying to skirt a heated conversation about politics despite the fact that everyone has been drinking steadily since noon--it's a delicate balance. Then, if you mix a seemingly cold mother with her son's shy and anxious new wife, it's not exactly the picture-perfect magical holiday scene that Hallmark promises us.

So, when a woman decided to consult the internet's moral compass of Reddit's, "Am I the As*hole" about an awkward situation she got into with her mother-in-law, people were ready to help.
