Donald Trump was sworn into office on January 20th, 2017 around 12 p.m. In less than an hour, the White House website expunged their LGBT page as well as any mention of climate change. It's Trump's America now, and he is jumping in with two feet.
Claire Landsbaum, a writer for New York magazine, tweeted the shocking amendment to the website.
When I initially clicked the link, I was redirected to sign up for Donald Trump's mailing list. Now when I am just getting a "404 that page does not exist" message. This is not a good first sign for members of the LGBT community who were hopeful that the new administration would continue to protect them despite Trump's spotty-at-best stances on LGBT rights and despite the fact he appointed noted homophobe Mike Pence as vice president. The former LGBT page now only exists in White House archives.
Also conspicuously missing from the White House website is any mention of climate change. Information on climate change now replaced with Trump's "America First Energy Plan," where Trump vows to dismember Obama's climate action plan. As Vice explains, it is normal for the White House website to flip over to the new administration exactly at noon, but alarming that the words "global warming" and "climate change" are completely scrubbed from the pages.
As of now, it is unclear if the LGBT page was expunged purposely, or if the website is still in the process of transitioning administrations and uploading information. We will update when more information becomes available.
In addition to any mention of climate change and LGBT outreach being missing, any information about civil rights previously on the White House website during the Obama administration has been removed. Perhaps even more disconcerting is that the website can no longer be translated into Spanish. However, The White House website did include links Melania Trump's jewelry line.
If you still want to give Trump's team the benefit of the doubt, you can make the excuse that they are still working on updating the website for the new administration. However, it is definitely making a statement that the things conspicuously missing from the site are the very issues Trump has been spotty (at best) with throughout his campaign. If he wants to say he is the President of all citizens, and that he cares about anyone other than straight white people, he is doing a piss poor job (pun intended). As days pass, it looks less and less likely that the Trump administration will reinstate the missing pages, which now can only be found on ObamaWhiteHouse.gov.
