While Republican Mitt Romney may have failed to become president, he did succeed in running a campaign without unleashing America's racist id and proposing bans of entire groups of people. As the GOP establishment watches the "Party of Lincoln" be hijacked by a human hate crime, their last presidential candidate is making a speech today in Salt Lake City, Utah, to try and squash the animated pumpkin that is Trump.
A version of the speech was leaked to the press, and has some impressive burns, with Romney calling Trump a phony and a fraud.
Here's what I know. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He's playing the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat. …
His domestic policies would lead to recession. His foreign policies would make America and the world less safe. He has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president. And his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.
Whether you voted for or against him four years ago, you have to agree with him here.
Naturally, Trump fired back at him on Twitter right away:
Trump then threw Romney's past campaign back into his face, which is admittedly quite awkward:
Twitter is both excited and confounded by the fact that Trump has Made Romney Relevant Again.
Oh, how naive we all were in 2012, back when Mitt Romney was the problem. How strange that now he's trying to be the solution.
