On January 14, a man named Thanasi Papoulias (who speaks both English and Greek) posted a phone video to his Facebook wall of a racist woman telling him and his wife Sophia Antonopoulos-Papoulias to "speak f**king English, this is America." The awful woman, who was standing behind the Greek American couple as they spoke to each other in Greek, is apparently a self-appointed member of the language police, and she doesn't want anything but plain ol' English, even if she's not part of the conversation.
The text accompanying the video reads,
So this just happened...
Sophia and I were in line at the market, and naturally, speaking Greek. Out of nowhere this lady behind us decides to give us a modern history lesson and tells us, "Speak F*@king English, this is America." Furthermore, she demonstrated her well-versed use of the English language by using every swear word to describe us and how we don't belong here. Imagine if we were with our kids.
Huge props to the manager for kicking her xenophobic, racist ass out. I only caught the tail-end on video, but you'll get the point.
Seriously. This. Just. Happened. It's 2017. #SMH
The manager handled the situation in a truly admirable manner, telling the woman in no uncertain terms that she's not welcome in her store. The shopper says she wasn't harassing the couple, but what else would you call butting into someone else's conversation to tell them what language you'd prefer they speak?
The whole point of America is freedom. When people say, "It's a free country," that's exactly what they mean. You can worship who you want, say what you're thinking, and look however you please.
This is America, speak whatever the hell language you want.
