Women are exposing their experiences with street harassment using the #nowomanever hashtag, and if you are a lady who has ever left your home, chances are you probably relate. The hashtag started when a woman named CJ (@ImJustCeej) called out a gross dude with this tweet.
CJ told BuzzFeed News that men on her Twitter were being "woefully obtuse about street harassment," so she decided to speak out against it in a way that is very blatant, but humorous as well. Soon, hundreds of women followed suit and started sharing their own stories of the weird and scary things guys have done to try to get their attention.
Most of the time, men try to convince women that randomly harassing them is really a compliment, and the ladies who can't go about their daily business without being bothered by horny men beg to differ.
This type of random harassment doesn't always happen on the street. Women are also being randomly solicited by men on the internet through social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Behind the shield of a computer screen, pervs are more inclined to be explicit and make violent threats against women.
Women shared their experiences with entitled men harassing them in general, and sometimes things go beyond verbal abuse.
CJ said she was shocked at how #nowomanever took off, and how many women participated, openly sharing their experiences with harassment. What she was not shocked about, however, was the reaction from men who then flooded her inbox. "The sad thing is that my mentions are still filled with people with men who don’t understand that women have a right and reason to be afraid of the way that they’re approached in public, and it might not be a good idea," She told BuzzFeed.
Despite a handful of dumb boys missing the point, if nothing else the #nowomanever hashtag showed ladies that they are not alone, and that the abuse is never okay.
