Childbirth is for sure a miracle. It may even be the most extraordinary feat a human is capable of. But pretty? Not so much. However, you wouldn't necessarily know that from Instagram, where people tend to post only the prettiest, "best" versions of themselves.
But mom blogger Sarah Turner, who blogs as The Unmumsy Mum on Facebook, is not about that Instagram-"perfect" life. She recently shared two selfies taken hours after the recent birth of her third son, Wilf.
Both photos are making waves for their honesty about what a post-baby body really looks like:
But especially the second one, in which she shows herself wearing nothing but an adult diaper.
Haters will not say it's photoshopped!
In the caption, she writes:
Looking back through pics of Wilf’s birth and these two are hands down my faves, for very different reasons ... Apologies for the second photo if you’re eating your breakfast but after initially thinking I can’t share that! I realised it’s less flesh than it would be if I shared my ‘bikini body’ and represents the postpartum reality so well - I was absolutely euphoric at this point, despite walking like John Wayne and wearing an adult nappy. I cannot tell you how much we were laughing by this stage either, mostly at how lucky James is. Huge shout out to the midwives at the Royal Devon and Exeter Maternity Services (Rosie and student midwife Lottie were simply brilliant - so grateful for our NHS) and also Siobhan The Positive Birth Company whose hypnobirthing techniques, particularly the breathing and visualisations, made all the difference (I’m going to write a blog post about the birth at some stage as despite being the best one yet it’s still a bit of a story involving blood pressure issues and another tricky placenta - mine never want to come on out ). Thanks too for all your lovely comments and messages, I’m really overwhelmed. Lots of love xx
Apparently Turner's no-holds-barred realness about childbirth is what the internet needs right now. Because her pics wracked up nearly 40,000 likes on Facebook, not to mention international media attention.
Lots, and lots, of moms can relate.
So what does Turner think of her newfound fame? Of course, she has a funny and snarky response:
Let's hope in 2018 we see a lot less filtered, photoshopped "perfection" on Instagram, and a lot more photos of new moms posing in diapers. Because the best things in life usually aren't that "pretty."
